NARAL Pro-Choice America has launched a new site: Free. Will. Power., a site that’s quite a bit more approachable than NARAL’s main site: it’s designed for a younger audience and filled with interesting information regarding each state and its approach to women’s reproductive rights.  Check it out – or enter their t-shirt design contest and win $1,000!

NARAL’s support helped President Obama

Okay, so it could be just a coincidence…

  • NARAL Pro-Choice volunteers contacted over 290,000 households to make them aware of Senator McCain’s abysmal voting record on women’s rights.
  • Obama prevailed in all eight battleground states where NARAL contacted voters on his behalf.
  • I wore my lucky blue voting socks and didn’t wash my hair.

Say it with me one more time:  President Obama.  Pres-i-dent O-ba-ma.  Mmmmm.

Beating the horse

Eek, the election is in less than a week!  Are you ready?  Here’s a little more info on some NARAL-supported Montana candidates who haven’t gotten much press on our blog yet.  Have you even thought about the state auditor?

Steve Bullock, Attorney General

Steve Bullock has been endorsed by NARAL Pro-Choice Montana PAC
because of his strong support for Montana’s constitutionally protected
right to privacy. Bullock’s opponent does not support access to
abortion care, even in cases of rape or incest. (Montana Family
Action survey).

Denise Juneau, Superintendent of Public Instruction

Denise is a strong supporter of medically accurate, age appropriate
sex education, and, if elected, will work to ensure that our young
people have the information they need to protect themselves from
unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

Monica Lindeen, State Auditor

Monica Lindeen has a lifetime 100% voting record with NARAL Pro-Choice
Montana in the state legislature. Her opponent recently released a
plan for the Auditor’s office that includes stripping consumer
protections in insurance plans by eliminating mandates that only
“some” consumers want. (Billings Gazette, 9/24/08, Grimes proposes
insurance plan) In Montana, insurance plans must cover birth control,
mammograms, and maternity care. Insurance companies often consider
women’s health care needs as “extra,” so these protections are
important. Monica knows how important it is for women to have access
to affordable reproductive health care, including birth control.

Linda McCulloch, Secretary of State

Linda McCulloch earned a 100% voting record from NARAL Pro-Choice
Montana when she served in the Montana legislature and was also
endorsed by NARAL Pro-Choice Montana PAC in her successful races for
Superintendent of Public Instruction. She is a long-time member and
supporter of reproductive rights.

Mike McGrath, Chief Justice, Montana Supreme Court

Mike McGrath is a strong supporter of Montana’s constitutional right
to privacy. As Attorney General, Mike issued a formal opinion
requiring health insurance companies to include birth control in their
prescription drug coverage. Mike was first elected Montana’s Attorney
General in 2000 and ran unopposed for his second term in 2004.

Oh, sweet irony

Pro-choice and women’s rights groups are reaping the rewards for the GOP nomination of Governor Sarah Palin (that’s her to the left).  Governor Palin, who is not shy when speaking about her views on abortion, is a member of Feminists for Life – an anti-abortion women’s group that advertises with the slogan “Refuse to Choose”.  Palin does not support the option for abortion in cases of rape or incest.  How is she helping pro-choice groups?

Existing and new member of abortion rights groups are alarmed by the prospect of a GOP ticket in which both candidates – McCain and Palin – would like to see Roe v. Wade overturned, and the vice presidential nominee supports abstinence-based sex education and opposed abortion in all cases unless the life of the mother is at stake.  Abortion rights supporters are flooding pro-choice groups with donations and assistance with programs that will alert the public to the views of the McCain-Palin campaign.

Both NARAL Pro-Choice America and Planned Parenthood have reported record-breaking fundraising for this election year.

We are Students for Choice!

NARAL Pro-Choice Montana‘s mission is to develop and sustain a constituency that uses the political process to guarantee every woman the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion.

Our vision for our community – a community in which every pregnancy is wanted, every child welcomed, every woman respected – is as strong as our determination to build it from the grassroots up.

With the support of organizers from NARAL Pro-Choice Montana, students and faculty at FVCC have created a new affiliate organization: FVCC Students for Choice. Membership in the Students for Choice empowers students to make informed reproductive and sexual health decisions and to participate in the process that shapes our reproductive choices, rights, and freedoms. Members organize on campus to protect reproductive rights, advocate for comprehensive sex ed and affordable birth control, to raise awareness and increase access to the morning-after pill, and to provide their peers with information on safe sex and sexually transmitted diseases. They are also an integral part of our efforts to get out the pro-choice vote and to educate voters on pro-choice issues and candidates.
