No Ten for Tennessee

This past election, South Dakota, Colorado, and California soundly defeated important anti-choice bills, but the Democratic sweep of the nation did not extend to Tennessee.

State Republicans, led by recently re-elected Knoxville Representative Stacey Campfield, are already attempting to resurrect the previously failed SJR127, an amendment that would “provide that nothing in the Constitution of Tennessee secures or protects right to abortion or requires the funding of an abortion”, including pulling government subsidies from Planned Parenthood. Oh, sweet irony

Pro-choice and women’s rights groups are reaping the rewards for the GOP nomination of Governor Sarah Palin (that’s her to the left).  Governor Palin, who is not shy when speaking about her views on abortion, is a member of Feminists for Life – an anti-abortion women’s group that advertises with the slogan “Refuse to Choose”.  Palin does not support the option for abortion in cases of rape or incest.  How is she helping pro-choice groups?

Existing and new member of abortion rights groups are alarmed by the prospect of a GOP ticket in which both candidates – McCain and Palin – would like to see Roe v. Wade overturned, and the vice presidential nominee supports abstinence-based sex education and opposed abortion in all cases unless the life of the mother is at stake.  Abortion rights supporters are flooding pro-choice groups with donations and assistance with programs that will alert the public to the views of the McCain-Palin campaign.

Both NARAL Pro-Choice America and Planned Parenthood have reported record-breaking fundraising for this election year.
