Il Mondo Cambia!

partito-democraticoItaly’s Democratic Party (Partito Democratico) calls this world-changing election la vittoria della esperanza – the victory of hope.

Italian commentator Walter Veltroni adds: “L’America sembra aver preso la strada giusta, questa notte rimarrà nella storia. (America seems to have taken the right road; this night will remain in history.)”

The important four-year-old demographic

henryvotesMy nephew went to his mom’s polling place this Tuesday, too, sample ballot and red voting marker in hand.  Though he was apparently not entirely clear on who he wanted to vote for, he was pretty certain that he knew who he was voting against.

NARAL’s support helped President Obama

Okay, so it could be just a coincidence…

  • NARAL Pro-Choice volunteers contacted over 290,000 households to make them aware of Senator McCain’s abysmal voting record on women’s rights.
  • Obama prevailed in all eight battleground states where NARAL contacted voters on his behalf.
  • I wore my lucky blue voting socks and didn’t wash my hair.

Say it with me one more time:  President Obama.  Pres-i-dent O-ba-ma.  Mmmmm.

Nate Silver, you are my hero

natesilver1Nate at fivethirtyeight.com, the new wunderkind of pollsters (that’s him to the left), has called the election for Obama, with the following statement:

!

I’m inclined to agree.

Cheers, America, and congratulations.  You’ve redeemed yourself in my eyes.  Now let’s get out the rubber gloves and the garbage bags and pick this mess up.

Oh, and big sloppy kisses your way, Nate.  You made my night.

VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE

votingToday’s a very exciting day!  I need you to do a few things for me:  grab your car keys and your photo ID.  Put on some mitties and your jacket (it’s cold out today!) and ask yourself the following questions:

Have I voted already?

If you already voted, good for you!  Take off your jacket and your mitties and have a cup of tea and some peanut butter toast. Take yourself out to dinner tonight to celebrate fulfillment of your civic duty.  Have a glass of wine for me.

Am I even registered?

Call the Flathead County Election Department (758-5535) to find out.  They can also tell you where your polling place is.  If you’re not registered, get your butt to the County Courthouse (the old looking one in the middle of the triangle, not the jail or the blue building) in Kalispell!  You can register and vote all in the same location, on the same day.

Do I have an absentee ballot?

If you received an absentee ballot but haven’t returned it yet, you must turn it in by hand at your polling location by 8:00 p.m. tonight.  Do not mail it!

Do I know where to vote?

If you are unsure of where to vote, please call the Flathead County Election Department (758-5535) or visit Obama’s polling location site and find out.  Then go vote.  If you can’t get to your polling place, please call me!  I will pick you up and drive you there. The polls are open until 8:00 p.m. tonight.

Don’t forget that this isn’t just about the Presidential race – though that’s huge.  Our local and state candidates make an enormous difference in how our state is run, and these folks have been working so hard over the last several months to ensure that they are in a position to help you.  Make sure that you choose candidates who are willing to stand up for your rights and protect pro-choice legislation.

McCain has contempt for women’s rights

Now is the time for all good men and women to come to the aid of their country by voting for Obama-Biden.

Consider John McCain’s attitude on equal pay for equal work. Last year the House of Representatives tried to correct a sex discrimination outrage with a bill names in honor of Lily Ledbetter whose employer’s 20 years of pay discrimination was upheld by the Supreme Court. McCain joined the Senate Republicans in a filibuster to kill the bill. Now, if you find that you are being paid less for doing the same tasks as your opposite sex colleagues, and your employer won’t make things right, file your claim promptly because, thanks to Sen. McCain and his cohorts, after 180 days from the day the discrimination began, you are out of luck.

Another salvo in McCain’s war on women is his vow to appoint to the Supreme Court justices who would overturn Roe vs. Wade, thus enabling states to criminalize abortion.
